What is the impact of near-infrared rays on the skin?
Near-infrared rays have a longer wavelength than ultraviolet rays, allowing them to penetrate deeper into the skin. The major cause of wrinkles and sagging is believed to be sunlight. UV-B rays penetrate the skin’s protective barrier (stratum corneum) into the superficial epidermis, causing blemishes and freckles. UV-A rays reach the dermis, where collagen and elastin support skin cells, causing not only blemishes but also wrinkles. Recent research suggests that near-infrared rays, penetrate deep into the fascia and muscle layers in the dermis and subcutaneous tissues, becoming a cause of wrinkles and sagging.
Composition of UV & Near-Infrared Rays in Sunlight
UV rays roughly make up 6& of sunlight, with nearinfrared rays accounting for 42%. It is important to shield against near-infrared rays to prevent aging of the skin.
